I've only had my G6 GT (2007) for a few days and am loving it. However, I have noticed a slight "pop" (or thump) when accelerating from a stop or turning at low speeds (usually accelerating then too). It is hard to tell where it is coming from, but feels like from right behind the steering column. I was wondering if it could be a suspension issue (car has 29k miles on it). My wife's Buick Rendezvous was doing something similar at 35k miles and had to have both front outer tie-ends replaced. Is it normal for the G6 to have a little pop (and it is VERY minor, btw) or something I should have the dealership look at?

Thanks.

Hi, Mine also does that little pop as you say, Let me know what the dealers says if you bring it in.
Well, I did take it to the shop for a few items, including the pop sound in the front. This is day 4 of it being in the shop (for a 1 day fix, I'm sure) and so far I have been told "yes.. they found the cause of the pop and have fixed it". But, that is just the salesman telling me that, since he isn't a service guy, he couldn't tell me what it was. HOWEVER, when (if ever) I get it back, I'll ask the service department for the answer, directly. And I'll let you know.

I've got this same problem on my 2005 GT (37K miles). Stupid me too, it was doing it at 35K but I was traveling on business alot and didn't get it looked at in time.

Maybe I can get some "goodwill" from GM. Wait, did I just say "goodwill" and "GM" in the same sentence? HAHAHAHA

I had the same problem. I especially noticed it when turning left at low speeds in the parking garage at work. I thought initially that I had a bad wheel bearing and took it in. Initially, the dealer tried lubrication of the intermediate shaft between the steering column and the rack and pinion due to excessive play. That didn't work - they replaced the intermediate shaft which fixed the problem.

'06 GT Coupe, 3.5L, 20k miles! And loving it except for having to fix the sunroof leak twice (fixed it the second time myself - just to know it was done right)

Popeye!

I bought a 2007 g6 a few weeks ago with 27k. It seems to have a cluck behind the steering wheel when i turn or take off. Let me know if the lube really worked or if it is a bigger issue?
Well, the lube seems to have worked thus far. It has been a couple of weeks now and no more popping noise/feeling from the front. Just hit 30k on the odo.

Well I took the car in this morning to have that pop checked out and thanks to this thread I had a good idea of the problem so I could explain it well. Shows on the slip that they tried to lube it and it took care of the noise about 50%, but then brought in back into the shop and just replaced the intermediate shaft. Steering feels so much tighter now, and the noise is gone, I love warranty.

Well I may have some info for those of you with the poping, grinding whatever noise that you hear when taking off from a stop or at slow speed turns. We have an 06' GTP and had it in our local dealer 5 times and ended up having the complete rack and pinion replaced as well as the intermediate shaft. It was a painful process and I am glad it is over but it does seem to have fixed the issue. Good luck to you in resolving this issue because our local dealer did not seem to want to take the time needed to find this.

Steering Pop

Took my '07 G6 (25k miles) to the dealership last week with the "popping" noise in the steering column when performing slow speed turns. They diagnosed it as a bad intermediate shaft...and of course, had to order a replacement. Haven't taken it back in to have the new i-shaft installed yet. Hopefully this will fix the issue, but I expect the pop to re-appear when the new i-shaft gets some wear (unless the replacement parts have been redesigned.) From other replies I've seen on this thread, it sounds like there may be several potential causes of the noises.

Is anyone else having vibrations when the brakes are applied (especially at high speeds). It feels like the rotors are warped, but they started vibrating with only 20k miles on them...I'm not relpacing rotors every 20k miles!

Yea Im having the same problem with the brakes after they get hot....sounds like a low rumble when I get on the brakes on a long high speed stop......Funny the dealer couldnt duplicate it.

Ive gone through the popping noise when hitting bumps or turning into driveways.

Irritating rattle in the headliner......took the dome light out and reached my hand up there to find some loose wires laying on top of the headliner.

Now I got a starter running after starting ( occasional ) for maybe a second or 2 after starting.

Gimme my old Goat back ! !

My O6 also had pop sound in the steering. Fixed with lubrication. There is also a GM service bulliten on this which replaces the steering shaft. Also have a rattle over bumps at low speeds, more so when cold so they replaced the shaft. Pop is still fixed but rattle is still there. Make sure you buy extended warranty before your 60 k is up. Any similar front end rattles?

Front End POP

Just got my '07 back from the dealership where they installed a new intermediate shaft in the steering - the pop is gone! Don't know how long it will last, but for now my car is not maddeningly irritating to drive again...:)
