So I have had my 08 G6 GT coupe since June. It has 6500 miles on it. Ever since it was new the brakes have squeaked when I begin to stop. The dealership claims that their is nothing wrong and they "don't hear it" sure whatever, anyone else have this problem? The brakes work fine and they are certainly not wearing down, especially since they have been doing this since new. Any suggestions?

Get some anti squeel from a local auto parts place. Take off your caliper and paint the stuff on the the surface of the pad that touches the caliper. Dont get it on the rotor side of the pad though!!!

That will take care of it.

or just take that stuff with you to the dealer and ask them to apply it.
That should sink home your point. I doubt they would do it though.

That stuff worked for me when I changed out my rotors and pads. No squeel FTW!!

90% of g6 brakes squeek the thing to watch out for as a tech and owner of one is uneven brake wear from the rear calipers

Do the brakes squeak when stopping hard or when stopping gently? My wife had an issue with her brakes squeaking when gently stopping, like when you are going through the McDonalds' drive thru, and it turned out to be the brake pads. This wasn't from the factory, is was after having new brakes installed. Newer, non-metallic brake pads don't use asbestos and the replacement material in the pads can cause this issue.

This sounds more like a belt. If your brake pads are completely wore out they will squeak all the time when not applied. Belts will sometimes squeak when accelerating. You might want to check with your Pontiac Service Center.

It seems their are alot of issues with G6 brakes, let me help on what I've seen. I have a 2006 G6 with 36000 miles and the squealers started hitting the rotors on the back. I took it to a dealer to see if they would help and of course they tried to give me the shaft. While i was there I asked why the backs wore out and the fronts are still good, like 85% remaining. they told me it's because pontiac perportioned the brakes so the bake brakes would do most of the work, so i had to ask, then why did they put such a small rotor and pads in the back...crickets. I went ahead and changed the backs and noticed the calipers are floating, meaning the pads are not pulled off the rotors when you let off the brakes. If your rotors are warped then you will hear the chirp chirp when driving slow. what i did to fix the problem is grind the paint off the pads where the pads sit in the calipers, and applied anti-seaze. this way the pads will move away from the rotors when no pressure is applied. I also put some brake squeal stop on the back of the pads where the calipers touch. this kinda sticks the pads to the calipers. so far so good. One last thing I noticed was the back rotors are solid. these suck because they do not disipate heat, which will eventually lead to warpage. personally change it all out.

2008 G6 GT Brakes Squeeky Squeeky

Yup..same issues here on my 08' with 5000 on the OD

Dealership said no issues.
Squeeked like crazy loud during stops, more on very humid days.
Orderd slotted and drilled rotors and installed new ceramic pads.
Still squeeks.
Has to be something with the way the pad sits in the caliper.

Hate it..but it's a G6 issue I have to live with.

Filed a safety complaint online with the NHTSA

I have an 05,45 on the OD same prob. But mine sqeak mainly on damp and rainy days, or right after a wash, otherwise i have the same highway issue like above. Dealer says theres nothing wrong, and two other mechanics tell me brakes are perfect...hmmmm Mind you consumers report says all G6 models have the worst brakes.....

Check wheel bearings for wear. Replace as needed.
Pull pads and clean all surfaces where pads contact caliper.
Check rotor surface for straightness, glazing or hard spots. Clean, resurface, or replace as needed.
Coat caliper surfaces that brake pad slide on with high temp brake caliper grease.
Coat back of inner pads with anti squeak compound.
Reassemble and test.

i have a 07 G6 that also has brakes that squeak. They made noise before so the dealership supposedly replaced my pads and rotors yet i get a squeaky noise that seems to only come when im slowing down or going very slow untill a stop (like at a fast food drive thru) I dont get it!! and recently when i told them AGAIN about the noise they said sorry we didnt hear anything. how is that my fault!? i'm the one who has to drive it every day while they drive it around for a minute. UGH!

My name is Liza and I am part of the squeeky brake club. I have had my 09 G6 for over a year and took mine to the dealership twice about them.....they have their ears clogged! I just deal with it cause I don't even know how to change a flat. (I will call 24 hour roadside or show some leg for help)

G6 Brakes - Noise if a NORM

It's a fact, G6's suffer from squeaky brakes. Looks to be 06 to 09.

I've replaced my rotors with slotted dimpled high performance one's with new pads and they still squeal like crazy !

I figure it's got to be a brake caliber pressure point along with the way the pad sits in the shoe cradle issue.

Squeaking is just harmonic vibration between the pad and the rotor, and obviously the pad doesn't fit snug enough or the pressure point where the caliber is pressing the shoe in at is not optimal, that the shoe vibrates and squeals.

Sucks, but I've just had to learn to deal with it. GM's not going to do anything, dealership isn't going to do anything. I tried to resolve replacing all my gear with high performance gear and that didn't work. So it's either get a different car or keep the G6. You can't find another hard top convertible in this price range, plus now it's possibly (20 years from now) a collectors item since Pontiac is gone now.

Cheers and good luck

Same problem here, I changed pads and rotors, even added shims to my 07 HTC, still have the squeal. Been trying a lot of power braking and that has helped a little, perhaps in time, its just that its twice as bad when you have a convertible!!

Hello all I just recently replaced my rear brakes. Before I replaced them they would slightly squeak when the brakes would first be applyed then as drive they seemed fine. I figured I'd replace the rotors and pads to be cautious. The first week after they were replaced they squeaked alot more when applyed to stop the car quick and hard braking, not gently or gradual braking! They have gotten better but still occasionally squeak. I put some Anti-Seeze on them seemed to help a little bit.

Hello all about a month ago I got my rear brakes done on my 06 G6 replaced rotors and pads to try to eliminate squeaking when brakes were applied at times. After I got the car back for the first week the brakes were squeaking alot more when applied. I brought my car back today to invistigate, I bought ceramic pads the first time and the mechanic said thats why you have brake noise the front brakes on the g6 you can use ceramic but the rears I was told require thermo-quiet organic pads to prevent noise problems. The ceramic pads that came off the car that were put on a month ago the sides were getting melted from noise and brake's being applyed. I left the rotors alone cause there only one month old so I will see if there is an improvement with this. So far not a peep from the brakes driving it home. Just thought I would share the info has anyone else hear this type of advice from anyone?

a couple of months ago i took my car into the brake shop because i had some nasty grinding...left front pad was worn down completely...the other pads all had completely different wear...all the rotors had uneven wear and blah blah...i asked the fella at the shop if he sees a lot of pontiacs...the chuckle with his answer led me to believe i'm definitely not the only one that's had this problem

Another Update!! Eventhough I had changed rotors and pads about a month ago, I decided to have new rotors turned and have installed wagners thermo quiet brake pads on the front, its only been 2 days but so far no seals or squeaks. Time will tell. I never heard of having to turn new rotors but I guess its possible!
