does anyone know if the steering wheel trim that holds the radio controls and the cruise controls are just pop offs?

They are held on by a screw. You have to remove the airbag module to get to the screws.

When you search for and find the illustrated instructions, the part that is not clear is that when you stick a tool through the access holes to release the retention spring, you are pushing the spring away from the switch trim pieces, or more or less in the direction of the center of the steering wheel.
