Tie Rod help

I went to my local mechanic for a state inspection today and my car failed due to bad tie rods. It is an 06 2Dr 3500 V6 with 46.9k miles. Is this the proper mileage for tie rods to go bad? Anything else I should know that goes bad about this mileage or that has gone bad but I don't know? I've had my brake pads replaced, rotors cut, new battery installed (last night), and I forget what was wrong with the steering but I poked around the forums and it is common so you'll know what I am referring to.
