I posted this over g6performance, figured I'd post here too.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) plate is the legal identifier of the vehicle. The VIN plate is located on the upper LH corner of the Instrument Panel and can be seen through the windshield from the outside of the vehicle:

The VIN is a 17 digit sequence of numbers and letters.
I'll break it down and list each option so you can decode your own VIN.

1) Country of Origin
1 = U.S.A.

2) Manufacturer
G = General Motors

3) Make
2 = Pontiac

4/5) Carline/Series
Z/F= Pontiac SE,
Z/G = Pontiac SE1,
Z/H = Pontiac GT,
Z/M =Pontiac GTP.

6) Body Style

5 = Sedan, 4-DR, 4-WDO Notch Back ( F69, G69, H69, M69)

1 = Coupe 2-DR (M37, H37)

3 = 2-DR Convertable (M67, H67)

7) Restraint System.
2 = Active Manual Belts W/Driver and Passenger Inflatable Restraint System Frontal
2 = Front Airbags only for 2005 model
4 = Front/Side Airbags for 2005 model
5 = Front Airbags only with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 mode
6 = Front/seat thorax with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 model (convertible only)
7 = Front/seat thorax/roof rail with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 model

8 ) Engine
B = 2.4L, L4 (LE5 RPO)
8= 3.5L , V6 (LX9 RPO)
1 = 3.9L, V6 (LZ9 RPO)

9) Check Digit
Check Digit

10) Model Year
5 = 2005
6 = 2006
7 = 2007
(since 2001 Model year GM has gone back to using Numbers for vin year code, previously was alphabetized)

11) Plant Location
4 = Orion, MI. USA

12-17) Plant Sequence Number
6 digit Plant Sequence Number

IE: 007245 would be the Seven thousandth, two hundredth, and fourty fifth car built that year. Obviously if you have 000001 You have the first car built from that plant for that model year of that vehicle.

Thanks - only update I have is that the Restraint system digit has different values depending on whether you have side airbags or not. In fact there are different codes between 2005 and 2006 model because 2006 added the Passenger Airbag suppression system:

2 = Front Airbags only for 2005 model
4 = Front/Side Airbags for 2005 model

Starting in 2006 there are different codes for if you have roof rail, seat thorax or any combination of them:

5 = Front Airbags only with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 mode
6 = Front/seat thorax with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 model (convertible only)
7 = Front/seat thorax/roof rail with Passenger Airbag suppression for 2006 model

And out in 2007 model I bet there are new engine codes ;)

Yeah.. I knew there were more, Oddly in Service info the only one listed for options was 2.
Was going to look into that today further.

I'll update the main list. Thanks.

If my car was number 160,093 made at Orion, do they also produce other vehicles there as well. I didn't think that that many G6s were made last year (2006). If they were all G6s how many were coupes and what was the final total for the year. Just curious. So far love the GTP. Would have liked bigger body colored mirrors and a few other minor things changed but overall so far (7500 kilometers) the car has been great. Love the acceleration ( I'm an old guy reliving my twenties)

this '10th digit' in the VIN has been designated as the 'Model Year' since 1980, beginning with the letter 'A'. this letter designation ended in the year 2000 with the designation 'Y' (there was no "I", 'O', 'Q', 'U' or 'Z')

in 2001, the designation began with the number '1' for 2001 and so on. but this is an INDUSTRY STANDARD and not just what "GM has gone back to using". this will work for a Ford, Chrysler, VW, Toyota or Kia as well. this also works, for the most part, with all the other 'breakdowns' of the VIN as well.

you can use this 'breakdown' on just about any car or truck if you have access to the information from the manufacturer.

it is my belief that in the year 2010, that the '9th' digit, which is currently a 'check digit' will become part of the year as well to go from '9' to '10' and so on.

just though i would throw that out there...... :deal:

My sequence number is 158,542. I know mine was built in September, 2006.

So are you saying that mine isn't the 158,542nd 2006 G6 built? It makes sense, since that number is well above what they sold in all of 2005. What does it mean then?

VIN Codes

I'm new to the forum and to a G6 GT 2008. I was under the impression that the VIN code contained the color of the car and also the type transmission that was installed as produced. I've had the car for 2 months and still don't know if the color is right and the type of trans mission that's installed. Is there a way to find out this information?

The vin breakdown in post one is pretty accurate in describing what the number does.
It does not tell color or trans. Within the dealer world, we can input a Vin and look al, that up, but why?
You already have it.
In the glove box is the silver/grey/black RPO label.
Regular Production Option.
All of the codes are there, the are 3 digit codes that represent different equipment on the car.
Transmission codes are the M codes.
If I recall paint codes are toward the end.
You can google GM RPO for a complete list of them all.

No, no room underneath the car, unless you use extremely small tubing which defeats the whole purpose.
Instead free up the exhaust in the resonator and use a split muffler.
