Paid $1,000 for this sucker......one of the best buys I've made. It supposedly had a blown 3.9L engine.
I bought this 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP convertible.......I didn't even look at it before I bought it.....The thousand dollar price was a killer deal........Anyhow, I thought all GTP models had the supercharger. But this car does not. That's pretty much the main reason I wanted the GTP version.Ok, so here's the story:

I see the car posted for sale on craigslist in the city of Sacramento......90 miles away from my house. I call the seller. She informs me that her husband looked at the engine and said the engine threw a rod and that the engine needed to be replaced.

I decided not to buy the car....an hour passes and I was just curious as to what the blue book value is on this car (I have never seen a convertible GTP until now). KBB value is $7,500......WHAT THE HECK!!!! So I call the owner back and say I will buy the car tomorrow. She says someone is coming to look at it in a few hours, but the first person with cash gets the car.......So I hop in my super fast Ferrari (AKA Scion xB Toaster Van) and I drive down to Sacramento and pay her for the car, telling her I will be back for it tomorrow and trailer it home.

No prob.

The next day, I borrow a Suburban and rent a trailer............The Suburban has a busted tail light........on the way to Sacramento, I see an auto recycling yard along the side of the highway........I pull into the yard to buy a used tail light.......I look to my left and see a 3.9 Liter engine sitting there. Pure luck.

I tell the recycler that I want to buy the engine for this Pontiac G6.....the employee tells me it might not fit, and that I need to know what the engine code is in the car VIN number.........so, off I go to pick up the car.

On the way back home, I pull back into the yard with the car, verify that the engine will fit. The engine is from a 2006 Impala Super Sport, or maybe it was from a 2006 Malibu Maxx SS.....anyhow

I get the engine home, I have to swap over the oil pan, the intake manifold, the water X over pipe, the fuel injectors....couple other things.

I install the engine into the G6.......

End of story right?.......Wrong.

I am curious about the rod being thrown......I look and see no rod thrown. I see the oil pump is intact. I see the cam shaft is not broken. I dig a little more and I finally see the damage..........turned out to be the timing chain tensioner had cracked and there was no tension on the chain.....lots of slack.

I buy a new timing chain tensioner, install it, put all the old parts back on the engine: oil pan, intake, water pipe, etc..... I prime the engine block with oil using the oil pump.

I do a compression test.......150psi across the board.

Crank shaft endplay is good, rod bearings plasti guage within specs, looks like I may have a good engine.

Any idea what the difference is between the GT and GTP convertible? I have an 07 vert with the 3.9L, monsoon system, heated leather seats, etc. I know the GTP sedans have all the bells and whistles like mine when the regular GT sedans don't. Any idea what the difference is?

I think this wikipedia article covers that pretty well. (I'm not an expert, so I defer to wikipedia on this :) )

I think the that the 'P' indicates the car comes with all available options as standard equipment and the bigger 3.9 liter engine where as the biggest engine in the GT cars were limited to 3.5 liters.

In 2006 you could get a fully loaded G6 with the 3.5 engine and it would be called the GT, but if it has the 3.9 engine the car would come with 'GTP' emblememblem on the trunk lid, and GTP stitched into the front and rear seats and um, I think thats it really.

I could be wrong though.

My 2007 convertible GT has all the bells and whistles and a 3.9L engine. 4 speed transmission though. Doesn't the GTP have a 6 speed?

With convertibles.....you couldn't get a 6 speed manual at all.......as far as I know, the 6 speed manual wasn't available in any convertible no matter what year the car is. I think this is due to the extra frame reinforcements installed under the car not allowing the manual to fit. GTP hard tops could get the 6 speed....but not the convertibles.

As a side note......I think the 3.5 hardtop cars are faster than the 3.9 convertibles.......a buddy of mine has a 3.5 hardtop.....we "raced" our cars a bit, side by side from a stand still start.......we were side by side up till 30mph then his car started pulling away ahead of mine (both cars have automatic transmissions). Both cars pretty much identical, biggest difference being the bigger engine in mine and the convertible top. You'd think the bigger engine would pull harder than the smaller, but that is not the case.

It does pull harder but not as much as it should. The convertible is roughly +400 pounds heavier than the hardtop. The convertible's exhaust is also very limited because of all the reinforcements. That's why I'm getting a new exhaust on mine ASAP. Plus the ECM is tuned for a grandma going to get groceries rather than two goons racing each other
