My son just bought a 2006 G6 GT with about 50k miles.

Engine light came on after he had it for about 100 miles :(

What type of scanner do I need to read codes on this car?
Not looking to be a pro, cheap works for me.....what would I get with a more expensive tool if he won't be doing any real work on this car....just wanting to know what the codes are and perhaps clearing them.

Thanks in advance.

I have an Actron CP9145 and am very happy with it. It not only gives you the fault code but also a brief description of the fault. It will also clear fault codes, which the cheap scanners don't. You can find one for around $100. Of course if you only want to read codes and don't mind looking up their meaning on the 'net, you can get one for $35-50.

If you spend $200-300 not only do you get the above features, but also a list of common troubleshooting steps to fix the fault. Again, this is stuff you can usually look up on the 'net.

Good choice. Mine is the CP9175....cant remember what I paid for it.
Its been awhile. I can also clear codes with my Dashhawk and I won a
SCT Dash Scan last week in a contest. Not sure what all it can do yet.
