I have my 2008 G6 in for the power steering problem. They replaced the module and it didn't work. That is covered. Now they say I need the steering column replaced and it is not covered at all. Anyonw else have this problem. I'm wondering how to go about fighting this. Basically being held hostage currently!

They are only replacing the steering column at no charge on the 2005-2006 G6s.

I have read all the threads about steering lock and clunking. However most seem to be in regards to the 2005 & 2006 models. My wifes car has the same symptoms but her's is a `07. I have it booked in to the stealership but was wondering if anyone with an `07 has had these problems.

Cheers,
Lager
I also have a 2007 g6. my mechanic replaced a sensor for the steering. this sensor had been replaced before and was able to be covered under warranty. but still having issues. its easy turning left but still kind of hard turning right but doesnt seem to shut off any more. hope this helps.

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT and it recently had the popping sound problem. The dealership (my friend actually worked on my car there) drove it and noticed the popping and also said something was causing a vibration on the engine panel (or something panel--don't have the paperwork with me). They did the lubrication process, reinstalled the (i believe) engine coolant resevoir, and added foam tape.
The popping is gone and it even seems to drive better...or the steering just feels a little firmer.

From all of these problems I've been reading about, though, should I be worried? Should I be annoyed? I know someone posted that their's hasn't been a problem since the fix, and others say the problem came back pretty soon. The dealership fixed it for free bc of either the TSB or they said bc of it being a known Pontiac issue and I'm a good customer... so I'm just wondering...
if this happens again, will I have to pay? Has anyone had to pay out-of-pocket for this fix? And when it's gone further than the lubrication and actual big-time replacement/work, have people had to pay for that?

(In general) Most cars have power steering, and some don't, so if your power steering goes out while driving, does this mean you have a sudden tightness? You would need a lot of fast strength to control the car? Can someone just explain what it's like for this to happen? (I know it hasn't happened with my car)

Yea it really sucks when you are in the middle of a turn and the power steering locks up. but "locks up" is slightly extreme. it does become VERY stiff but you can hold it.(mine only goes out when im turning left for the most part) the hardest part for me is when it does stop working it jerks left (i instinctively correct by pulling right on the steering wheel) and then when it locks up its almost like it wants to recenter its self straight so it pulls right (remember i pulled it to the right after it jerked left). thats the best i can explain it. just be prepared that when it doest lock up it will want to straighten out. whether you are turning right or left its going to want to spin back to center.

reset power steering while moving

I dont know if anyone has figured this out yet, but most of you probably know that when you shut the car OFF and then restart it the power steering generally returns. BUT what i have found is that when i am driving and it locks up, if i just click the key back one click and then back again to where it was it resets the steering also. WARNING: if you do this will moving to slow the car will shut off but if you are moving around 10-15 or faster it just shuts the electronics down and then returns to normal. i try to turn the key quick and that seems to help. pls let me know if this works for anyone else.

Looks like its been a long time since anyone posted here.
2010 G6 2.4 Electric Assist Steering, had the issue about 10 times over the course of the 5 years where you get the traction esc chime and lose power steering. The issue I had last night is a little different. Car had been running for about 10 min started up fine, put in reverse and the steering wheel was able to turn about 4" and it whipped back out of my hands? Turned the car off and all I get it click, click and click..battery? I put in neutral and pushed the car back into the spot, had a guy come jump me and it fired right up but still cant steer the car at all keeps jerking out of may hand. Took the battery (year and 1/2 old) to parts store they said it was low. If I charge the battery up can I unhook the power assisted steering from the column and drive back home a few miles with it unhooked? The parts place said I would have to have the new part programmed to the car for it to work if it was the power assisted steering. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Steering

To all of you who are going thru the same ordeal as I am. I spoke to the Customer Assistance rep AGAIN who has been "assisting" me. And she said that GM is only focusing on the steering complaints that go thru the BBB. If you want them to pay attention and hopefully fix the problem you need to file a complaint with your states BBB. Please do this!!! I dont want to see anyone go thru these problems like I am. She said that so far I am one of very few who have taken it to the BBB there for theres no record of these issues. ALSO! I have retained an attorney and we are looking to locate G6 owners who have this very same issue to possibly do a class action suit against GM. GM is clueless on whats causing this there for they are shooting in the dark and throwing parts at our cars and they dont really know the cause. We are their guinea pigs! PLEASE let me know if you want to get involved. You can email me at Carissavzw@aol.com. This is a dangerous issue whether you are going 5mph or 55mph. When my steering went completely out i ended up driving into landscaping at my development. Thank god it wasnt serious!
I have been on the phone with GM for the past week off and on twice a day. We bought a 2005 G6 GT for my daughter. She was coming home with my other 2 girls from school and her steering wheel started making a clicking sound, as she started to slow to exit the freeway it locked on her and she almost went off the road. A notice came up on her radio screen stating "Power steering" we took it to our local dealership and they said it was the recall replacement part that went out. It was replace on 10/31/2014 at 126,436K miles and today at 144K miles the part is malfunctioning. GM rep said they are no longer responsible for the repair, i went as far as speaking with the Supervisor and he also denied assistance in replacing or repairing a part that GM recalled. I followed your advice and have filed a complaint against GM with our local BBB. a recall replacement part should not last less than the original part. I am disappointed with the purchase of my daughters first vehicle.

You have to replace it at your own cost. Parts replaced under recall carry no warranty.
My original transmission cable was recalled and replaced when it was 8 years old. The new revised cable failed in less than 2 years. Both GM and the dealer said it is not covered by warranty so I had to replace it at my expense. I no longer trust any recalls until they offer a warranty on the recalled replacement parts. It is likely they will replace it with an inferior part.

The power steering failure is rare but if it fails the steering wheel will likely lock up and you could lose control of the vehicle. To be safe don't drive a vehicle with EPS.
